Service VME - A/C ON LED Inoperative or Appears to Toggle ON and OFF

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

On CJ3-Manual HVAC equipped vehicle, the A/C "ON" LED may appear to Toggle ON and Back OFF in one unique condition as follows: engine running, headlamps on, instrument panel lamps dimmed to minimum, and the rear defrost button is turned on and off or allowed to time out.

This condition has been investigated by engineering and is considered normal. The 2004 and 2005 model years owner's manuals have this explanation. The instrument panel brightness may need to be turned up to visually see the A/C "ON" LED during the daylight hours with the headlamps on and the instrument panel brightness turned to the minimum intensity setting.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
