Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement.
  2. Remove the intermediate steering shaft fastener. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
  3. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement.
  4. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  5. • Vehicles equipped with LTD / U20XE. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.
    • Vehicles equipped with LE5 / U24XE. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.
  6. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.

  8. Remove the oil cooler inlet (1) and outlet (5) hoses from the retainer (2) on the control valve body cover.
  9. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet hose nut (3) from the transmission.
  10. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet hose (1) from the transmission.
  11. Remove the transmission fluid cooler outlet hose nut (4) from the transmission.
  12. Remove the transmission fluid cooler outlet hose (5) from the transmission.
  13. Plug and/or cap the hose and transmission to prevent contamination.
  14. Install both hoses to the vehicle.
  15. Remove the range selector lever cable from the transmission. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement.

  17. Disconnect the control valve body transmission control module (TCM) electrical connector (1) then unclip the connector and the wiring harness from the transmission.

  18. Object Number: 1998673  Size: SH
  19. Remove the upper transmission to engine fasteners (2).
  20. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
  21. Position and secure the radiator to the vehicle.
  22. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
  23. • Vehicles equipped with LTD / U20XE. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
    • Vehicles equipped with LE5 / U24XE. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
  24. Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement.
  25. Remove the transaxle brace.
  26. Remove the transmission rear mount. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement.
  27. Remove the transmission front mount. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement.
  28. Remove the drivetrain and front suspension frame front crossmember. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Front Crossmember Replacement.
  29. Remove the left front wheel drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.
  30. Remove the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Shaft Replacement.

  32. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
  33. Remove the torque converter to flywheel fasteners (1).
  34. Lower the vehicle.
  35. Remove the 3 left transmission mount fasteners from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.
  36. Lower the transmission side with the support fixture to allow clearance for removal.
  37. Raise the vehicle.
  38. Use a transmission jack in order to support the transmission.

  40. Remove the 7 transmission fasteners (1, 3, 4).
  41. Note: Insure the torque converter remains securely in place on the transmission input shaft while separating and removing the transmission.

  42. Separate the transmission from the engine.
  43. Lower the transmission with the transmission jack far enough to remove the transmission.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Raise the transmission with the transmission jack and position the transmission to the engine.

  2. Object Number: 1998673  Size: SH
  3. Install the 7 transmission fasteners (1, 3, 4).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  5. Remove the transmission jack.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the 3 left transmission mount fasteners to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.
  8. Raise the vehicle.

    Note: If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the threads and apply LOCTITE™242, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the threads prior to installation.

  10. Install the torque converter to flywheel fasteners (1).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  12. Install the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
  13. Install the left front wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.
  14. Install the drivetrain and front suspension frame front crossmember. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Front Crossmember Replacement.
  15. Install the transmission front mount. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement.
  16. Install the transmission rear mount. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement.
  17. Install the transaxle brace.
  18. Install the oil level indicator tube.
  19. • Vehicles equipped with LTD / U20XE. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
    • Vehicles equipped with LE5 / U24XE. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
  20. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.

  21. Object Number: 1998673  Size: SH
  22. Install the upper transmission to engine fasteners (2).
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  24. Connect the control valve body transmission control module (TCM) electrical connector (1).
  25. Install the range selector lever cable to the transmission. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement.

  26. Object Number: 1998666  Size: SH
  27. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet hose (5) to the transmission.
  28. 20. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet hose retainer nut (4).
  29. Tighten
    Tighten to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  30. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet hose (1) to the transmission.
  31. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet hose retainer nut (3).
  32. Install the oil cooler inlet (1) and outlet (5) hoses to the retainer (2) on the control valve body cover.
  33. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
  34. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  35. • Vehicles equipped with LTD / U20XE. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.
    • Vehicles equipped with LE5 / U24XE. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.
  36. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement.
  37. Install the intermediate steering shaft fastener. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
  38. Install the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement.
  39. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector lever cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment.
  40. Fill the transmission with fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement.
  41. For transmission control module programming and setup, refer to Control Module References.
  42. Note: After an internal transmission repair or internal part replacement the service fast learn adapt procedure should be performed.

  43. Perform the service fast learn adapt procedure. Refer to Service Fast Learn Adapts.
  44. Road test the vehicle.
