Component Name

Caution: The steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the following components:

   • The steering column
   • The steering shaft coupling
   • The intermediate shaft
   • The lower steering shaft
After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  4. Using a suitable jack stand, support the frame assembly.
  5. Release the bolt to the rear transmission mount, refer to LINK.
  6. Remove the rear fasteners to the frame the frame to body bolts. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Front Crossmember Replacement.
  7. Lower the rear part of the frame MAX. 50 mm, in order to gain clearance to the steering gear.

Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Nut (Qty: 2)

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

Tighten
35 N·m(26 lb ft)

Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod (Qty: 2)

Procedure

Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

Steering Gear Inlet and Outlet Hose Fastener

Procedure

  1. Place drain pans under the vehicle to catch any power steering fluid.
  2. Install NEW steering gear oil seals.

Tighten
9 N·m(80 lb in)

Steering Gear Bolt (Qty: 2)

Procedure

Install New bolts.

Tighten
110 N·m(81 lb ft) + 150 degrees

Steering Gear

Procedure

  1. If equipped with variable effort steering, disconnect electrical connector.
  2. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
  3. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment.
