Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 41820 Ball Joint/Stud Separator
    • J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the front wheel drive shaft bearing. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  4. Remove the front lower control arm ball stud-to-knuckle cotter pin and nut.
  5. Separate the front lower control arm stud from the front steering knuckle using the J 41820
  6. Remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use the J 24319-B .

  7. Object Number: 385558  Size: SH
  8. Scribe the strut to the knuckle.

  9. Object Number: 385564  Size: SH
  10. Remove the bolts connecting the strut to the knuckle.
  11. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the knuckle to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 385564  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolts which connect the strut to the knuckle.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the strut to knuckle bolts to 123 N·m (90 lb ft).

  5. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering.
  6. Connect the front lower control arm ball stud to knuckle and install the front lower control arm ball stud nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the front lower control arm ball stud to knuckle nut to 55 N·m (40 lb ft).

    Align the slots to the front lower control arm ball stud nut with a cotter pin hole by tightening the nut. Do NOT loosen the nut in order to align the holes for the cotter pin.

  8. Install the front lower control arm ball stud cotter pin.
  9. Install the front wheel drive shaft bearing. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
