Action

Air in the power steering system

  1. Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks .
  2. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Loose joints from the steering column to the power steering gear

  1. Inspect the joints from the steering column to the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  2. Replace the joints from the column to the steering gear if necessary. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .

Misadjusted rack bearing preload

Tighten the rack bearing preload to specification. Refer to Steering Gear Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

Loose steering gear mounting

  1. Inspect the steering gear mounting. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
  2. Torque the power steering gear mounting bolts to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).

Loose tie rod ends

  1. Inspect the tie rod ends. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection .
  2. Replace the tie rod ends. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .

Worn wheel bearings

  1. Replace the wheel bearing. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Bearing Replacement in Front Suspension.
  2. Replace the hub. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Bearing Replacement in Front Suspension
