Important: If the wrong ignition key is used in an attempt to start the vehicle, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be set. The body control module (BCM) will not send a fuel enable or starter enable message to the powertrain control module (PCM) for 3 minutes even if the correct ignition is used.

In order to copy an ignition key, first determine which PASS-Key II® resistor key code is needed. The ignition key being copied must be tested in order to determine the key code. The ignition key may be tested using the J-35628-A. In order to use the J-35628-A, turn the tool on. Ensure that the tool wiring connectors are disconnected and insert the ignition key into the tool lock cylinder. The Key Code Reader will display the resistor key code of the ignition key. Obtain an ignition key blank matching this resistor key code. Copy the mechanical cut of the original ignition key to the blank key.

In order to replace a lost VATS/PASS Ignition Key, determine the original mechanical cut and resistor key code.

The mechanical and resistor key codes should be recorded on the vehicle invoice. If this information is available, use the information in order to create a new ignition key. If the vehicle invoice is not available, perform the following procedure:

Important: Do not disconnect the yellow 2-way SIR connector.

1. Create a blank (non-resistor) ignition key with the proper mechanical cut. Refer to Cutting Keys in General Information.
2. Connect the J-35628-A wiring to the ignition lock cylinder connector located at the base of the steering column. Do not connect the J-35628-A to the steering column side of the ignition lock cylinder connector.
3. Turn on the J-35628-A. Turn the key code switch to 1 and attempt to start the engine with a properly cut key. If the engine starts, the resistor key code is 1.
4. If the engine dose not start, turn off the ignition and press the 4-minute timer on the J-35628-A .
5. When the timer light goes out, turn the key code switch to 2 and attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts, the resistor key code is 2.
6. Continue trying to start the engine using different resistor key codes until the proper resistor key code if found.
7. Make a new ignition key with the proper resistor key code and mechanical cut. Refer to Cutting Keys in General Information.
