Did you perform the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn the ignition on.
  2. Shift the gear selector lever to the REVERSE position.

Do the both backup lamps turn on?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Is only one backup lamp inoperative?

Go to Step 7

Check the fuse 29 for an open.

Is the fuse 29 open?

Go to Step 10

  1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp to a known good ground and probe the battery positive voltage feed for the park/neutral position switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Install a fused jumper across the battery positive voltage feed and the backup lamp supply voltage circuit of the park/neutral position switch.

Do the backup lamps turn on?

Go to Step 16

Connect a test lamp between the backup lamps supply voltage circuit of the inoperative backup lamp and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 8

Connect a test lamp between the backup lamps ground circuit of the inoperative backup lamp and battery voltage.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test for a high resistance or an open in the backup lamps supply voltage circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Repair a short to ground in the backup lamps supply voltage circuit or the park/neutral switch positive voltage feed circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair a high resistance or an open in the park/neutral position switch battery positive voltage feed. Refer to Wiring Repairs Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair a high resistance or an open in the backup lamp supply voltage circuit of the inoperative backup lamp. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair a high resistance or an open in the backup lamp ground circuit of the inoperative backup lamp. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
