Circuit Description

The knock sensor (KS) produces an AC voltage at all engine speeds and loads. The PCM then adjusts the spark timing based on the amplitude and frequency of the KS signal. The PCM uses the KS signal to calculate the average voltage. Then, the PCM assigns a voltage value. The PCM checks the Knock Sensor and related wiring by comparing the actual knock signal to the assigned voltage range. A normal KS signal should stay outside the assigned voltage range. This DTC will set if the PCM malfunctions in a manner that will not allow proper diagnosis of the KS system and related wiring.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • DTC's P0101,P0102,P0103,P0107,P0108,P0117,P0118,P0121,P0122,P0123,P0125,P0336,P1114,P1115,P1121, P1122,and P1336 are not set.
    • Engine speed is between 1000 and 5000 RPM.
    • Throttle angle is more than 15 percent .
    • Engine load is more than 40 percent .
    • Engine coolant temperature is more than 60°C (153°F).
    • Maximum spark retard is less than 15 degrees.
    • System voltage is more than 9 volts.
    • Engine run time is more than 30 seconds.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The PCM detects a malfunction in the integrated knock sensor diagnostic circuitry which will not allow proper diagnosis of the knock sensor circuit.
    • Above conditions for at least 1 second.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The PCM will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed.
    • The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

    • The PCM will turn OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic has run and passed.
    • The history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a malfunction.
    • The DTC can be cleared by using a scan tool.

  1. Observe the Freeze Frame and/or Failure Records for this DTC.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC, or within the parameters observed in the Freeze Frame and/or Failure Records.

Does the DTC fail this ignition?

Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement .

  1. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC.

With a scan tool, observe the stored information in Capture Info.

Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed?
