GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The keyless entry system allows the driver to use a hand held radio transmitter in order to perform the following functions outside of the vehicle:

    • Unlock the door locks
The courtesy lights activate automatically when the door is unlocked.
    • Lock the door locks
    • Release the rear compartment lid
    • Activate the remote alarm

The transmitter operates on the UHF band. The transmitter digitally sends the coded signals to the remote door lock receiver (RCDLR) when any of the remote transmitter buttons are pressed.

The RCDLR detects and decodes the transmitter signals. For all functions the RCDLR sends command messages to the body control module (BCM) in order to operate the following components:

    • The door locks actuators
    • The courtesy lights
    • The remote alarm
    • The rear compartment lid release relay

The door lock and lighting systems can be operated by the switches on inside of the vehicle.

The keyless entry system may be programmed with up to 4 keyless entry transmitters.

Body Control Module (BCM)

The body control module (BCM) controls the following keyless entry system functions:

    • The door locking
    • The interior lighting
    • The remote alarm operation
    • The rear compartment lid

Refer to Body Control System Circuit Description in Body Control System.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

The remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) sends the door locking remote alarm and rear compartment lid command messages to the BCM through the RFA link.

The BCM may set the following DTCs that are related to the keyless entry system:

    •  DTC B3102 RFA Link Circuit Shorted to Ground
    •  DTC B3103 RFA Link Circuit Shorted to B+
    •  DTC B1003 RFA Programming Message Not Received
    •  DTC B3106 RFA Link Parity Error
    •  DTC B3267 Decklid Output Relay Short to GND/Open
    •  DTC B3268 Decklid Output Relay Short to BATT

Refer to Body Control System Circuit Description in Body Control System.

Keyless Entry Functions

The keyless entry system performs the following functions:

    • Remote driver door unlock: The driver's door unlocks when the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed.
    • Remote all door unlock: All of the doors unlock when the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed 2 times or more.
    • Remote all door lock: All of the doors lock when the LOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed.
    • Rear compartment lid release: The rear compartment lid opens when the REAR COMPARTMENT button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed.
    • Remote activation verification: The headlamps flash and/ or the horn sounds when the keyless entry transmitter performs any of the remote functions.
    • Remote alarm: The headlamps flash and the horn sounds alternately for 2 minutes when the ALARM button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed. Press the ALARM button again, within 2 minutes of the initial press, in order to stop the remote alarm.

Remote Driver Door Unlock

The RCDLR sends a message to the BCM, through CKT 377, in order to unlock the driver's door upon pressing the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter 1 time.

Remote all Door Unlock

The RCDLR sends a message to the BCM, through CKT 377, in order to unlock all of the doors upon pressing the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter 2 times (allowing no more than 5 seconds to elapse between presses).

Remote all Door Lock

The RCDLR send a message to the BCM. through CKT 377, in order to lock all of the doors upon pressing the LOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter 1 time. The following features alter the normal remote door locking operation:

    • The lockout prevention feature:
The BCM will not lock the doors when the lockout prevention feature is active.
    • The last door closed locking feature:
The BCM delays the door locking when the last door closed locking feature is active.

Refer to Power Door Locks Circuit Description in Doors for more information on the lockout prevention feature and the last closed door locking feature.

Remote Alarm

When the ALARM button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed, the RCDLR sends a message to the BCM. The message is sent to the BCM through CKT 377 in order to flash the headlamps and sound the horn alternately for 2 minutes. Press the alarm button a second time in order to stop the remote alarm.

Rear Compartment Lid Release

When the REAR COMPARTMENT button on the keyless entry transmitter is pressed, the RCDLR sends a message to the BCM through circuit 377. The BCM energizes the rear compartment lid release relay and applies voltage to CKT 56. The rear compartment lid lock release actuator energizes and releases the rear compartment lid.

If the transmission/ transaxle is shifted out of the PARK position, the rear compartment lid release feature is disabled.

Courtesy Lights Activation

The BCM turns ON the courtesy lamps when unlocking the doors with the keyless entry transmitter. Refer to Interior Lamps System Check in Lighting Systems.
