Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement Drum Brake
Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Remove and discard the wheel bearing/hub
bolts.
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub.
- Disconnect the wheel speed
sensor electrical connector (2).
Installation Procedure
- Connect the wheel speed
sensor electrical connector (2).
- Install the wheel bearing/hub.
Caution: These fasteners MUST be replaced with new fasteners anytime they become
loose or are removed. Failure to replace these fasteners after they become
loose or are removed may cause loss of vehicle control and personal
injury.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install NEW wheel
bearing/hub bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the wheel bearing/hub bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).
- Install the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
.
- Inspect the ball joint. Refer to
Ball Joint Inspection
.
- Disconnect the sensor lead.
- If equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD) remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Refer to
Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement
.
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly knuckle bolts (1).
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly (1) from the knuckle (2).
Installation Procedure
- Install the wheel bearing/hub assembly (1) on to the knuckle (2).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the bolts (1) into the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
Tighten
Tighten the wheel bearing/hub bolts to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).
- Install the wheel drive shaft into the wheel bearing and tighten the nut. Refer to
Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement
.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 260 N·m (192 lb ft).
- Connect the sensor lead.
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
.
- Lower the vehicle.
