J 41820 Ball Stud/Joint Separator

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1641274  Size: SH
  1. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  2. Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side .
  3. Remove the oil filter and drain the crankcase. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  4. Remove the engine harness clips for the wheel speed sensor from the right lower control arm.

  5. Object Number: 313776  Size: SH
  6. Remove the cotter pin (1) from the ball stud (3).
  7. Loosen, but DO NOT remove the ball stud nut.

  8. Object Number: 378908  Size: SH

    Notice: Use only the recommended tools for separating the ball joint from the knuckle. Do NOT hammer or pry the ball joint from the knuckle. Failure to use the recommended tools may cause damage to the ball joint and seal.

  9. Install the J 41820 over the ball stud nut and steering knuckle as shown.
  10. Rotate the ball stud nut counterclockwise in order to separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle.

  12. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.

  14. Remove the transaxle brace bolts, if equipped with regular production option (RPO) M76.
  15. Remove the transaxle brace.

  16. Object Number: 1641295  Size: SH
  17. Remove the transaxle brace bolts, if equipped with RPO M15.
  18. Remove the transaxle brace.
  19. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

  21. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the oil pressure sensor.
  22. Remove the retainers that secure the brake line to the frame.

  23. Object Number: 161239  Size: SH
  24. Remove the transaxle mount to cradle nuts.
  25. Install a suitable adjustable jack under one side of the cradle. Have an assistant support the other side.
  26. Remove the cradle bolts, with the aid of the assistant remove the cradle.

  28. Remove the oil pan side bolts.
  29. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  30. Remove the oil pan.
  31. Remove the oil pan gasket.
  32. Clean the oil pan sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 61840  Size: SH
  1. Install a NEW oil pan gasket. If you are installing the rear main bearing cap, apply sealer to both sides of the crankshaft rear main bearing cap (1). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers for the correct part number. Press sealer into gap using a putty knife

  2. Object Number: 1641276  Size: SH
  3. Install the oil pan.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the oil pan bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the oil pan side bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. With the aid of an assistant position the cradle under the vehicle, and place an adjustable jack under one side and have the assistant support the other side.
  10. Install the cradle bolts.
  11. Tighten

        • Tighten the front cradle bolts to 155 N·m (114 lb ft).
        • Tighten the rear cradle bolts to 240 N·m (177 lb ft).
  12. Install the transaxle mount to cradle nuts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  14. Install the retainers that secure the brake line to the frame.
  15. Connect the engine harness electrical connector (1) to the oil pressure sensor.

  16. Object Number: 1641295  Size: SH
  17. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  18. Install the transaxle brace, if equipped with RPO M15.
  19. Install the transaxle brace bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft).


    Object Number: 1641294  Size: SH
  21. Install the transaxle brace, if equipped with RPO M76.
  22. Install the transaxle brace bolts.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 43 N·m (31 lb ft).


    Object Number: 1640909  Size: SH
  24. Position the A/C compressor and install the A/C compressor bolts.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).


    Object Number: 384426  Size: SH

    Important: Align the ball stud cotter pin hole parallel to the knuckle in order to ease the cotter pin installation.

  26. Install the ball stud to the knuckle.
  27. Install the ball stud nut.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 55 N·m (40 lb ft).

    Important: Do not loosen the ball stud nut in order to align the ball stud nut slots to the ball stud cotter pin hole.

  29. If necessary, tighten the ball stud nut in order to align the ball stud nut slot (1) to the ball stud cotter pin hole (2) as shown.

  30. Object Number: 384428  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure that the cotter pin ends do not contact the ABS sensor connector or the drive axle.

  31. Install a NEW cotter pin and bend the ends as shown in either direction.

  33. Install the engine harness clips for the wheel speed sensor to the right lower control arm.
  34. Install the oil filter and fill the crankcase. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  35. Install the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side .
  36. Remove the engine support fixture.
