For 1990-2009 cars only

If your child restraint has the LATCH system, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) .

If your child restraint does not have the LATCH system, you will be using the lap-shoulder belt to secure the child restraint in the center rear seating position.

To secure a child restraint in this position, you will use only the lap part of the belt. Disconnect the shoulder part of the belt and store it before securing child restraint. See Center Rear Passenger Position .

If you are using a top tether-equipped child restraint in the center rear seat and need to temporarily transport a flat tire for repair, move the child restraint to a rear seat outboard position. See Securing a Child Restraint in a Rear Outside Seat Position for more on this, including important safety information.

Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. Secure the child in the child restraint when and as the instructions say.

  1. Make the belt as long as possible by tilting the latch plate and pulling it along the belt.
  2. Put the child restraint on the seat.
  3. Run the vehicle's safety belt through or around the restraint. The child restraint instructions will show you how.

  4. Object Number: 1379322 Size: B3
  5. Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
  6. To tighten the belt, pull its free end while you push down on the child restraint. If you are using a forward-facing child restraint, you may find it helpful to use your knee to push the child restraint as you tighten the belt.
  7. If your child restraint has a top tether, attach and tighten the top tether to the top tether anchor. Refer to the instructions that came with the child restraint and to step five under Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) .
  8. Push and pull the child restraint in different directions to be sure it is secure.

To remove the child restraint, if the top tether is attached to the top tether anchor, disconnect it. Unbuckle the vehicle's safety belt. When you remove the child restraint, be sure to reconnect the lap and shoulder parts of the belt so they will be ready to work for an adult or larger child passenger.
