To prevent accidental damage to the drive axle boots when doing service work on a vehicle in the area of the drive axle, it is recommended that Protectors J-28712 be installed in the boots. Refer to illustration. It is also important that these boot protectors be used when drive axle assembly is removed from a vehicle (transmission removal, etc.).
Beside protecting the boot, the protectors aid in preventing over-extension when removing a drive axle. If a drive axle joint is over-extended, internal parts may fall out and there is a potential for dirt entering joint which will result in failure of the axle.
Always remember to remove the protectors after the service work is completed.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
