DELCO/BOSE SPEAKER INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1983 Riviera

The repair or replacement of components for the Delco/Bose Sound System may require the rework of body sheet metal and/or trim components as outlined on the following pages:

1. Rear Seat To Back Window Panel Speaker Opening:

Cut the rear seat to back window metal panel with electric shears, impact tool or etc., as shown in illustration. Remove all sharp edges and burrs to prevent interference with the speaker enclosure installation.

Before installing rear speaker enclosure, install gasket (Part Number 20444313) to speaker housing. Paper on the gasket should not be removed and should contact the enclosure surface.

2. Rear Seat To Back Window Panel Trim:

No rework of the rear seat to back window panel trim is required. Replacement trim with the required opening is available from WDDGM. Before installing trim, each speaker grille must be attached to the trim with four (4) M4x0.7 thread hex nuts with integral locking washer (WDDGM Part Number 11502847, and 121753 or equivalent).

3. Front Door:

No rework of the door inner panel, water deflector, or acoustic absorber is required.

4. Front Door Trim:

No rework of the lower front door trim assembly is required. Replacement parts with the required opening for the speaker enclosure are available from WDDGM.

The trim rin and courtesy lamp on the lower door can be removed from the damaged panel and reused on the replacement lower trim panel. If required, replacement trim rings and courtesy lamps can be ordered from WDDGM.

5. Front Door Enclosure:

Grill Cloth Replacement: Replacement grille cloth in the required interior trim color can be ordered from WDDGM. The initial step in the procedure consists of removing the damaced cloth from the enclosure and cleaning the surface with 3M-8984 General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, or equivalent. Care must be exercised to prevent the cleaner from entering the speaker opening. After the surface has been cleaned, apply a thin layer of Sure Seal Trim Adhesive (BASG), or equivalent, to the face of the enclosure. Do not apply adhesive over the holes for the speaker. After the adhesive has been applied, lay the grille cloth over the front surface of enclosure (Do not stretch the fabric) and carefully apply pressure to form the cloth to the surface of the enclosure. Using the same technique, form the cloth to the sides and then to the retaining ring on the lower edge of the enclosure. The cloth must cover the top surface of the retainer. After this operation is completed, trim the excess cloth using the edge of the retainer as a guide. The speaker can now be reinstalled in the door trim panel.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition.
