Scme 1979 through 1984 Rivieras may experience a torn or worn drive axle boot on either the right or left drive axle shaft. This condition may result from the drive axle grease inside the axle boot reacting with the boot material. In mid-February of 1983, a new grease was released for production. All WDDGM stock currently includes the new grease; the part numbers for drive axle service parts remained the same. Part numbers for grease kits containing the new grease for the inboard and outboard seals are as follows:
1. Grease Service Kit, Outboard P/N 7845010 2. Grease Service Kit, Inboard P/N 7845011
When servicing a drive axle shaft, make certain the old grease is removed from the boot and new grease installed.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
