'GARLIC ODOR' REPLACE DASH PANEL COVER

A "GARLIC" TYPE ODOR MAY BE DETECTED IN SOME 1982/83 'E' STYLE VEHICLES. IF THIS ODOR IS ENCOUNTERED, THE SOURCE MAY BE THE STEERING PANEL TO DASH PANEL COVER, P/N 1261621. THE STEERING COLUMN RUBBER BOOT IN SOME INSTANCES WHEN DAMP, EMITS AN OFFENSIVE ODOR WHICH PERMEATES ALL SOFT TRIM MATERIAL IN THE VEHICLE. THIS CONDITION IS CAUSED BY UNDERCURED RUBBER AND HAS C BEEN CORRECTED BY THE SOURCE. IF YOU SHOULD ENCOUNTER THE PROBLEM , THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE IS RECOMMENDED. 1. REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN RUBBER BOOT (P/N 1261621). 2. REPLACE THE LH AND RH INSTRUMENT PANEL CLOSE-OUT PANELS. 3. WASH THE ENTIRE INTERIOR TRIM WITH GM CLEANER 992870 OR EQUIVALENT (INCLUDES CARPET, LITTER CONTAINER, INSTRUMENT PANEL SEATS, DOOR TRIM PADS, PACKAGE SHELF, HEADLINER GARNISH, SUNVISORS, HEADRESTS, ETC.)

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
