INCREASED BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL PARKING BRAKE CABLE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 'E' Series Vehicles Equipped With 4 Wheel Disc Brakes

The rear wheel disc brakes on 'E' Series vehicles contain a self adjusting feature as part of the parking brake mechanism. Adjustment of the parking brake cable results in setting a minimum gap between the lining and the piston. As the normal lining wear occurs, application of the brakes causes the mechanism to adjust to maintain the minimum gap. If, however, the parking brake cables are not adjusted properly, the self adjusting mechanism will not adjust to the minimum gap. As the lining wears, a gradual increase in pedal travel may be experienced.

If increased brake pedal travel is experienced and the brake pedal is firm, adjust the parking brake cables per Service Manual procedures. If the brake pedal is spongy, bleeding of the brakes may be required.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
