TAPE PLAYER IGNITION NOISE TAPE PLAYER BRACKET GROUNDED

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 RIVIERAS

Some 1986 Rivieras may exhibit ignition noise in the tape player. This noise may be caused by a grounded condition between the tape player bracket and console. Use the following procedure to correct this condition.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Pull upper console trim plate straight away to remove.

3. Remove the four (4) screws retaining the tape player bracket to the console (screws labeled 4 in Illustration).

4. Pull tape player rearward and remove and discard the four (4) console U-nuts for the screws referred to in Step 3.

5. Install four (4) plastic nuts, Part Number 1370853, in the console mounting holes for the screws referred to in Step 3, taking care to ensure that none of the plastic nuts are cocked or cracked after installation.

6. Reinstall the tape player and four (4) screws retaining the tape player bracket to the console, taking care to install the left upper screw first to ensure proper clearance between the tape player buttons and the opening in the trim plate.

7. Reinstall the upper console trim plate.

8. Reconnect the battery.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
