ALDL COVER TO COMPLETE CIRCUIT CIRCUIT NOT COMPLETE PROCEDURE

ALDL CONNECTOR COVER

MODELS AFFECTED: 1986 RIVIERA

NOTE: This bulletin supersedes original bulletin which was published without Illustration. Please discard original bulletin and replace it with this one.

The Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL) cover is an integral part of the On-Board Computer Communication System on the 1986 Riviera. Within the cover is a jumper that completes the Serial Data Circuit (800) when installed. Without this jumper, the designed-in circuit redundancy will be lost and could result in premature need for dealer service.

Make certain that the cover is installed at new vehicle delivery preparation, and also, any time the vehicle is serviced. If the cover is missing, it should be reordered using Part Number 12048107. A temporary jumper should be installed in the ALDL between terminals "L" and "M", until the proper cover arrives. See Illustration. The new cover strap should be attached to the wiring harness with tape or a band. Do not remove wire harness terminals to install new connector cover.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
