MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 BUICK RIVIERAS

The 1987 Buick Riviera Body Computer Module (BCM) includes an EEPROM that contains specific vehicle information such as: Vehicle Identification Number, accumulated vehicle mileage, certain vehicle options, and other information. Due to this information, an EEPROM CANNOT be exchanged from one vehicle to another. If the EEPROM malfunctions as indicated by BCM code B556, it will be necessary to obtain a replacement from an authorized Delco Electronics Service Center.

The following information must be given to the Delco Electronics Service Center when ordering a new EEPROM:

1. Complete Vehicle Identification Number. 2. Current mileage of vehicle. 3. Whether or not the vehicle was built for U.S. or foreign country operation (Z49). 4. Whether or not the vehicle is equipped with twilight sentinel option (T82). 5. Does vehicle have low windshield washer fluid level indicator (CD2)? 6. Does vehicle have Illuminated Entry (C97)? 7. Does vehicle have Theft Deterrent (UA6)?

The replacement EEPROM will be received with a claim form from the Service Center. The form is to be completed by the dealership and returned to the Service Center with the malfunctioning EEPROM. One copy of the claim form is to be retained by the dealership and attached to the repair order. Failure to return the malfunctioning EEPROM with the claim form will result in the assessment of a $200.00 core charge.

Zone offices will be notified of any EEPROMs not returned within 60 days. All replaced EEPROMs returned to the Service Center will be forwarded to Delco Electronics for evaluation and reading.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
