Some owners of 1990-91 Rivieras may exhibit a condition where the inside door pull handle breaks loose. This condition occurs when the die cast escutcheon which retains the pull strap breaks. Refer to Figure 1. A revised die cast escutcheon is now available as a separate service part, P/N 16659897.
To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. Remove door trim pad.
2. Remove pull handle insert by disengaging trim fasteners.
3. Remove both die cast escutcheons by disengaging washers from back side of insert.
4. Discard escutcheons and washers.
5. Install pull handle insert to door trim.
6. Install door trim pad.
7. Install pull handle and new escutcheons, P/N 16659897.
For vehicles repaired under warranty use: 1.0 hour for both doors.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
