REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER FUSE MAY BLOW (INSTALL BREAKER)

REVISION: 06/10/94

BULLETIN BEING REVISED TO ADD 1992 MODEL YEAR FOR THE OLDSMOBILE CUSTOM CRUISER. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUBJECT: REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER FUSE MAY BLOW (INSTALL CIRCUIT BREAKER)

MODELS: 1991-93 BUICK ROADMASTER 1991-93 CHEVROLET CAPRICE 1991-92 OLDSMOBILE CUSTOM CRUISER

CONDITION:

IN RARE CONDITIONS, THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER FUSE MAY BLOW. THIS USUALLY OCCURS ONLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND THE DRIVER IS CONTINUOUSLY RESETTING THE SWITCH AS SOON AS THE TIMER GOES OUT. THE TIMER TURNS THE DEFOGGER OFF 10 MINUTES AFTER THE SWITCH IS USED THE FIRST TIME, THEN AFTER 5 MINUTES EACH SUBSEQUENT USE.

CAUSE:

CONSTANT USE OF THE DEFOGGER, WITHOUT THE NORMAL COOLING OFF PERIOD BETWEEN CYCLES, CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE ENOUGH HEAT BUILD-UP IN THE CIRCUIT TO CAUSE THE FUSE TO BLOW. THE HEAT BUILD-UP DOES NOT CAUSE ANY OTHER NOTICEABLE SYMPTOMS.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE FUSE WITH A CIRCUIT BREAKER FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW. THIS CHANGE WAS MADE IN PRODUCTION IN 1994 VEHICLES.

1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. LOOSEN THE FUSE BLOCK ENOUGH TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE BACK. REMOVE FUSE #15. THEN REMOVE THE TWO TERMINALS FROM CAVITIES F5 AND E5, AND CUT OFF AND DISCARD THE TERMINALS.

3. CRIMP AND SOLDER A NEW TERMINAL, P/N 12052227, TO THE ORANGE/BLACK WIRE, AND INSTALL IN CAVITY K5 (CIRCUIT BREAKER E). CRIMP AND SOLDER TERMINAL, P/N 12034001 TO THE RED WIRE, AND INSTALL IN CAVITY J5.

4. MAKE A NOTE OF THIS CHANGE IN THE VEHICLE'S OWNER'S MANUAL.

5. INSTALL 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER, P/N 14103366, IN LOCATION E IN THE FUSE BLOCK. REINSTALL THE FUSE BLOCK.

6. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. CHECK THE DEFOGGER FOR PROPER OPERATION.
