DIFFICULTY OPENING HOOD NEW SPRING FOR HIGHER LIFT

HOOD LATCH - DIFFICULTY REACHING SECONDARY HOOD LATCH

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1982-88 BUICK SKYHAWKS ------------------

Some customers may comment about a condition where the secondary hood latch is difficult to reach without manually lifting the hood. This condition can be corrected by installing a new spring, part number 22537852, and special washer, part number 22538559, to the hood catch assembly per the following procedure.

1. Remove the existing hood catch assembly from the hood reinforcement.

2. Remove the top retainer nut, using care to restrain the spring when the nut reaches the end of the threaded portion of the bolt.

3. Remove the existing spring and discard.

4. Place the new special washer onto the bolt, placing it directly over the existing cup-shaped retainer (see illustration).

5. Place the new spring onto the bolt as shown in the illustration.

6. Install the nut onto the bolt, and thread down until the distance from the top of the nut to the bottom of the cup-shaped retainer is 64 mm. (see illustration)

7. Reinstall the hood catch assembly to the hood reinforcement, torquing to 18 N.m (13.3 lbs.ft.).

8. Test for proper operation.

Use applicable labour time operation.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
