OIL LEAK AT OIL PAN NEW OIL PAN GASKET

NEW OIL PAN GASKET

MODELS AFFECTED: 1982 THRU 1986 SKYHAWKS EQUIPPED WITH ---------------- 1.8L OHC ENGINE (VIN CODE "0 & J")

NOTE: This bulletin supersedes original bulletin 86-6-8 dated March, 1986 to correct part numbers.

A new one piece oil pan gasket has been released into production on 1986 1/2, 1.8L OHC engines. The new gasket has steel inserts at the bolt holes to provide improved torque retention and uniform gasket compression. In addition, the new gasket has a semicured neoprene coating to develop strong adhesion to the cylinder case and oil pan flange.

In addition to the new gasket, new longer oil pan bolts have been released and must be used with the new gasket. New torque limits of 8-10 N.m (7-8 ft. lbs.) must be applied with the new oil pan bolts.

Oil Pan Gasket P/N Oil Pan Bolts Torque ------------------ ------------- ------ 10045456 11509669 or 11503803 8-10 N.m (7-8 ft. lbs.) (1 Required) (14 Required)

Before replacing the oil pan gasket, care should be taken in determining the exact source of the engine oil leak. All new 1.8L OHC engines have ultraviolet dye added to the engine oil to facilitate oil leak diagnosis. This dye mixes with the engine oil and causes it to take on a yellowish glow under a blacklight. Tracer dye is available for higher mileage vehicles and its use is recommended.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
