OIL FILL LEVEL AND FILTER CORRECT INFORMATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1982-84 'J' Models Equipped With 1.8L OHC Engine

There has been some confusion about the correct oil fill level and filter on the 1.8L OHC (VIN codes O and J) engines used in some 'J' cars.

OIL FILL LEVEL

1. 1982 and 1983 Vehicles - the currect fill is 2.8 liters (2 1/2 quarts) with or without a filter change.

2. 1984 Vehicles - the correct fill is 3.8 liters (3 1/3 quarts) with or without a filter change.

Whenever changing oil, the quantity listed should be added, then the oil level should be checked following instructions in Section 5 of the Owner's Manual. Oil should then be added to bring the level up to the 'FULL' mark on the dipstick.

OIL FILTER

The filter listed for 1982 and 1983 is the PF40. For 1984, the filter is the PF47. In all instances, the PF47 can be used. The difference is that the PF47 has an anti-drainback valve. A.C. Delco is combining oil filter usages, and will supply a PF47 when a PF40 is ordered.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
