THE REVERSE INHIBIT MECHANISM ON SOME, (P/N 14051043) TRANSMISSION CONTROL ASSEMBLIES (SHIFTERS) IN 1983 CAVALIERS EQUIPPED WITH THE M19, FOUR SPEED MANUAL TRANSAXLE MAY NOT RELEASE WHEN OPERATOR PULLS UP- WARD ON THE LIFT TRIGGER. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE CONTROL ASSEMBLY IS UNABLE TO ENTER THE REVERSE GATE. DIFFICULTY TO RELEASE THE REVERSE INHIBIT MECHANISM MAY STEM FROM BREAKAGE (USUALLY AT COLDER TEMPERA- TURE) OF PLASTIC RELEASE PARTS SUCH AS THE BELLCRANK OR THE NYLON PULL STRAP. ON VEHICLES WHERE INSPECTION INDICATES THE CONTROL ASSEMBLY CONDITION DESCRIBED, REPLACE THE UNIT'S REVERSE INHIBITOR RELEASE PARTS MOUNTED ON THE SHIFT HANDLE PER THE INSTRUCTION SHEET CONTAINED IN SERVICE KIT, P/N 14081101. THE KIT, LABELED TRIGGER AND PULL ROD UNIT - TRANSMISSION CONTROL, IS PACKAGED TO INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: - LIFT TRIGGER - PULL STRAP - BELLCRANK - PAWL ROD - PAWL ROD SPRING - BOOT RETAINER - INSTRUCTION SHEET FOLLOWING REPAIR, VERIFY THE PROPER OPERATION OF THE CONTROL ASSEMBLY BY CHECKING FOR REVERSE ENGAGEMENT AND A SMOOTH SHIFT INTO EACH GEAR.
