Some 1984 skyhawks equipped with pulse wipers (CD4 option) may experience a false (phantom) wipe when the turn signals are operated. This will happen with the wiper control in the "OFF" position.
The false wipe is usually caused by oxidation of the wiper switch contacts, which results in a high resistance condition.
To repair this condition, install a new pulse wiper switch, part no. 7848195 for a standard column or part no. 7848196 for a tilt column. DO NO use the old switches with part no. 7843025 or part no. 7844427. The new wiper switches have silver contacts to prevent oxidation and maintain continuity in the closed position.
If the new switch does not correct the phantom wipe condition, check for a loose or corroded connection, pinched wire or open circuit.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
