INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR RACK AND PINION STEERING GEARS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1982-88 SKYHAWKS 1986-87 SOMERSETS/SKYLARK 1988 SKYLARKS

When installing a center-take-off rack and pinion steering gear in a subject model, always hand start the four clamp nuts then tighten the left side clamp nuts (driver's side of car) to the correct torque specifications first (Refer to Illustration).

The right side clamp nuts (passenger's side of car) should then be tightened to the correct torque specifications (Refer to Illustration).

The nut torque specification for 1982-86 models is: 39 N.m (28 lbs. ft.)

The torque specification for 1987-88 models is: 30 N.m (22 lb.s ft.)

This procedure will appear in the 1988 Skyhawk/Skylark Chassis Service Manual. The procedure is applicable to all current and past model center-take-off manual and power steering gear assemblies.
