REVISED SPARK PLUG RECOMMENDATIONS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 SKYHAWKS WITH THE 2.OL L-4 ENGINE (VIN CODE 1)

Incidents of plug foul ing in cold climates (below freezing) on 1987 Skyhawks with L-4 (VIN Code 1) engines can occur with short-hop cold engine driving schedules. A hotter heat range spark plug (type "R44LTSM" with a .035" gap) will lessen or eliminate the plug fouling condition.

The new plug is available from GMSPO in either a 4-pack, Part Number 5614156 or an 8-pack, Part Number 5614155.

Spark plug "R44LTSM" is a copper core tapered-seat spark plug and replaces the original gasketed spark plug. The aluminum cylinder head machining will allow either spark plug seat configuration to be installed.

First installation torque of the tapered seat spark plug is 18-22 Ft. lbs. (24-30 N.m.). Subsequent installation torque for new or old spark plugs is 7-15 Ft. lbs. (10-20 N.m.).

This bulletin is for information only.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
