A HARD OPERATING OR INOPERATIVE MANUAL OR ELECTRIC FRONT DOOR GLASS ON 1982 'A' AND 'X' CARS, IN MOST CASES, CAN ONLY BE TEMPORARILY CORRECTED BY REPLACING A DRIVE TAPE OR A COMPLETE WINDOW REGULATOR ASSEMBLY. A DAMAGED DRIVE TAPE COULD BE THE RESULT OF ONE OR MORE BINDING CONDITIONS THAT MAY EXIST WITHIN THE DOOR SYSTEM. BECAUSE OF THIS, CERTAIN AREAS OF THE DOOR SYSTEM SHOULD BE INSPECTED WHEN DETERMINING A CAUSE FOR A HARD OPERATING OR INOPERATIVE FRONT DOOR GLASS. THOSE AREAS OF INSPECTION, ALONG WITH CAUSES RELATED TO THE SUBJECT CONDITION AND CORRECTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS: PRIOR TO PERFORMING ANY SERVICE OPERATIONS, THIS BULLETIN SHOULD BE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY. 1.INSPECT THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL ABOVE THE BELTLINE FOR A TWISTED OR DISTORTED CONDITION WITH EMPHASIS IN THE FRONT FILLER AREA (SEE FIGURE 1). STRAIGHTEN THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL ASSEMBLY OR REPLACE IT IF NECESSARY. 2.SEPARATE THE LIPS OF THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL IN THE REAR VERTICAL PORTION OF THE WINDOW FRAME AND INSPECT THE METAL RETAINER FOR A BENT OR PINCHED CONDITION (SEE FIGURE 1). STRAIGHTEN THE METAL RETAINER OR REPLACE THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL ASSEMBLY IF NECESSARY. 3.INSPECT THE OUTER DOOR BELT SEALING STRIP AND GLASS RUN CHANNEL ASSEMBLY, IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT AND REAR SEALING STRIP FILLERS (MUCKETS) FOR ADEQUATE FLOCKING MATERIAL (SEE FIGURE 2). IF EXCESSIVE GLASS TO RUBBER CONTACT IS NOTED (VOIDS IN THE FLOCKING MATERIAL), REPLACE THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL ASSEMBLY, SEALING STRIP AND/ OR FILLERS. 4.ON 'A' CARS (AND ON 1983 'X' CARS), INSPECT THE OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR GASKET TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS PROPERLY INSTALLED. AN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED MIRROR GASKET COULD CAUSE A TIGHT CONDITION IN THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL AT THE MIRROR LOCATION AND RESTRICT THE UP AND DOWN TRAVEL OF THE DOOR GLASS. SUCH A CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY REWORKING THE GASKET (SEE FIGURE 3). 5.REMOVE THE DOOR TRIM PAD AND INSPECT THE DRIVE TAPE FOR SIGNS OF DAMAGE. REPLACE THE DRIVE TAPE IF IT IS DAMAGED. REPLACEMENT OF THE WINDOW REGULATOR ASSEMBLY IS NOT NECESSARY. 6.ISOLATE THE BINDING AREAS OF THE DOOR SYSTEM BY REMOVING THE WINDOW REGULATOR DRIVE BLOCK, AND SLOWLY RAISING AND LOWERING THE GLASS BY HAND (SEE FIGURE 4). IN ORDER FOR THE DOOR GLASS TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY, THE GLASS MUST BE PROPERLY LOCATED WITHIN THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL AND BE PARALLEL TO THE UPPER DOOR FRAME (SEE FIGURES 5 AND 6). 7.IF AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO MOVE THE DOOR GLASS OUT OF THE SEAL, REPLACE THE GLASS RUN CHANNEL ASSEMBLY. 8.INSPECT THE FRONT LOWER GLASS RUN CHANNEL RETAINER FOR A MISALIGNED, BENT OR PINCHED CONDITION (SEE FIGURE 7). STRAIGHTEN OR ALIGN THE RUN CHANNEL AS NECESSARY OR REPLACE IT. 9.CHECK ALIGNMENT OF THE WINDOW REGULATOR SASH TO LOWER GLASS SASH ATTACHING SCREWS. IF THE SCREWS ARE DIFFICULT TO INSTALL, THE SASH CHANNEL COULD BE IMPROPERLY LOCATED TO THE GLASS. THE LOWER SASH CHANNEL LOCATION FROM THE FRONT LOWER CORNER OF GLASS SHOULD BE 445 MM + AND/OR - 1.5 MM (17 1/2 INCHES + AND/OR - 1/16 INCH) (SEE FIGURE 8). RELOCATE THE LOWER SASH CHANNEL TO THE DOOR GLASS. TO ASSIST IN PERFORMING ANY SERVICE OPERATION DESCRIBED IN THIS BULLETIN, REFER TO THE DOOR SECTION (5) OF THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
