IT HAS RECENTLY COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT RACK AND PINION HOUSING ASSEMBLIES ARE BEING REPLACED IN THE FIELD WHEN THE TECHNICIAN OBSERVES GROOVES WORN IN THE VALVE BORE BY THE VALVE RINGS. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE HOUSING ASSEMBLY WHEN GROOVES ARE OBSERVED. (FIG. 11) NEW RACK AND PINION VALVE RINGS, ARE GREEN IN COLOR FOR IDENTIFICATION , ARE BEING SERVICED UNDER PART NUMBER 7840573 WHICH INCLUDES STUB SHAFT SEALS. IF A CONDITION OF REDUCED POWER ASSIST WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED COLD IS ENCOUNTERED, THE VALVE RINGS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH THE GREEN RINGS, PART NUMBER 7840573. IF A COMPLETE VALVE ASSEMBLY IS REQUIRED AND IT DOES NOT HAVE GREEN RINGS, NEW RINGS SHOULD BE ORDERED UNDER PART NUMBER 7840573 AND INSTALLED ON THE NEW VALVE ASSEMBLY. RACK AND PINION POWER STEERING VALVE RINGS 1980 & 81 OMEGA WHEN REPLACING THE SPOOL VALVE RINGS ON THE RACK AND PINION STEERING GEAR, WITH THE NEW GREEN SPOOL VALVE RINGS PART NUMBER 7840573, MENTIONED IN THE JULY, 1981 SERVICE GUILD, PAGE 103, DIFFICULTY MAY BE ENCOUNTERED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL THE SPOOL VALVE INTO THE STEERING GEAR HOUSING. THE NEW GREEN SPOOL VALVE RINGS MUST BE COMPRESSED IN ORDER TO FIT THE VALVE INTO THE HOUSING BORE. A SPECIAL COMPRESSING TOOL HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND IS PART OF THE 1982 ESSENTIAL TOOL PACKAGE. VALVE BODY RING INSTALLATION- RACK & PINION STEERING GEAR IF DIFFICULTY IS EXPERIENCED WHEN INSTALLING VALVE BODY RINGS ON A VALVE AND PINION ASSEMBLY, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN FIG 2. THE INSTRUCTIONS ALSO EXPLAIN THE USE OF J-33057 TO HELP RESIZE THE RINGS BEFORE INSTALLING THE VALVE AND PINION ASSEMBLY INTO THE HOUSING.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
