THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF TIMING GEAR NOISE WHEN THE 2.5L ENGINE IS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON THE 1982-83 6000 AND PHOENIX VEHICLES. THIS NOISE IS CAUSED BY THE LOAD APPLIED TO THE CAMSHAFT BY THE VACUUM PUMP. TO CORRECT THE CONDITION REMOVE THE VACUUM PUMP AND INSTALL COVER, PART NUMBER 10022599, AND GASKET, PART NUMBER 9776705, USING THE EXISTING BOLTS AND WASHERS. A VACUUM CANISTER, PART NUMBER 14080255, MUST BE INSTALLED USING NUTS, PART NUMBER 11503747. THE VACUUM CANISTER IS INSTALLED BELOW THE VAPOR CANISTER AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2 SIX FEET OF 1/4" VACUUM HOSE, ONE FOOT OF 1/8" VACUUM HOSE AND 1/4"- 1/8" REDUCER ARE REQUIRED TO CONNECT THE CANISTER. THE CANISTER SHOULD BE CONNECTED AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1. VERIFY OPERATION OF CRUISE CONTROL UNIT. IF THE OPERATION IS NOT SATISFACTORY DUE TO TERRAIN INSTALL 1984 TRI-MODE UNIT USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE: 1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. 2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER. DISCONNECT SERVO AT THROTTLE PIN. REMOVE SERVO BRACKET TO MANIFOLD BOLTS. (SERVO REMOVED LATER WITH VEHICLE RAISED.) 3. RAISE VEHICLE. 4. DISCONNECT SPEEDOMETER CABLE AT TRANSMISSION. REMOVE VACUUM PUMP. CLEAN BLOCK SURFACE AND INSTALL A NEW GASKET AND PLATE. REMOVE SERVO/BRACKET ASSEMBLY. ROUTE NEW SPEEDOMETER CABLE BETWEEN BULK- HEAD AND REFRIGERANT PIPE AND CONNECT DRIVE END TO TRANSMISSION. 5. LOWER VEHICLE. 6. DISCONNECT SPEEDOMETER CABLES AT TRANSDUCER. DISCONNECT WIRING AND VACUUM HOSES AT TRANSDUCER. REMOVE TRANSDUCER. REMOVE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CRUISE WIRING AND VACUUM HOSES. REMOVE TRANSDUCER TO TRANSMISSION SPEEDOMETER CABLE. 7. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL HUSH PANELS. DISCONNECT SPEEDOMETER CABLE AT SPEEDOMETER HEAD. DISCONNECT UNDER DASH CRUISE WIRING AND VACUUM HOSE. LOOSEN COWL GROMMETS AND REMOVE SPEEDOMETER CABLE, WIRING HARNESS AND VACUUM HOSE THROUGH COWL OPENINGS. 8. TEMPORARILY INSTALL TRANSDUCER BRACKET WITH TWO SCREWS AND MARK THIRD HOLE LOCATION. REMOVE BRACKET AND DRILL 8.0MM HOLE. ATTACH TRANSDUCER TO BRACKET AND INSTALL TRANSDUCER/BRACKET TO BULKHEAD. 9. INSTALL TWO (2) THROTTLE BRACKET STUDS IN INTAKE MANIFOLD. INSTALL THROTTLE BRACKET. INSTALL THROTTLE CABLE TO THROTTLE PIN AND TRANSDUCER (NOTE ADJUSTMENT INSTRUCTIONS). 10. REMOVE EVAP. CANISTER, HOLD DOWN BOLTS AND MOVE CANISTER ASIDE. DRILL TWO (2) HOLES AND MOUNT VACUUM TANK. (NECESSARY TO R AND R CLOSE OUT.) INSTALL VACUUM HOSE TO TANK. 11. COMPLETE ROUTING INSTALLATION OF TANK TO SOURCE VACUUM HOSE. CONNECT A/C VACUUM HOSES (LEAVE OLD VACUUM TANK IN PLACE ON COWL). REINSTALL EVAP. CANISTER ROUTE AND INSTALL HOSE FROM VACUUM SOURCE TO TRANSDUCER. 12. ROUTE AND INSTALL VACUUM WIRING HARNESS FROM TRANSDUCER TO INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSURING PROPER GROMMET SEAL AT COWL. ROUTE AND INSTALL SPEEDOMETER CABLE ASSURING PROPER GROMMET SEAL AT COWL. 13. REMOVE OLD BRAKE PEDAL SWITCHES AND INSTALL NEW SWITCHES. INSTALL CRUISE MODULE BRACKET AND MODULE. CONNECT HARNESS AND HOSES TO MODULE AND SWITCHES. 14. REPLACE POWER LEAD CONNECTOR AND CONNECT TO INSTRUMENT PANEL POWER WIRE. MAKE NECESSARY SPLICES TO BROWN WIRE AND SPLICE TO BROWN VSS WIRE (PINK OF INSTRUMENT PANEL CONNECTOR #C210). 15. R AND R STEERING COLUMN COVER. R AND R MULTIPURPOSE LEVER (ASSURE INSTALLATION OF FOAM INSULATOR IN STEM OF NEW SWITCH). 16. REINSTALL HUSH PANELS BEING SURE WIRING IS NOT PINCHED. 17. REINSTALL AIR CLEANER. RECONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. 18. ROAD TEST VEHICLE AND VERIFY OPERATION OF CRUISE.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
