INSIDE DOOR PANEL CORROSION - SHIM SEAT BELT RETRACTOR PLUNGER
Some 1986-87 'J' and 'N' vehicles may exhibit an abrasion/wear mark and/or corrosion on the inside of the door panel where the seat belt retractor comfort plunger contacts the door when closed. This condition develops when the paint on the door is worn away due to vibration of the door relative to the plunger (dust or other materials may accelerate the condition by acting as an abrasive).
This condition can be corrected by:
1. Repair the abraded or corroded area as required.
2. Install shim, Part Number 20339618, using screw Part Number 11509608 or equivelent, to door as shown in Figure 1. Parts are currently available from CANSPO.
3. Check door operation and adjust door striker as necessary.
4. In cases where door striker adjustment causes unsatisfactory operation or appearance, it may be necessary to replace the seat belt retractor with one available through CANSPO.
Use the most applicable labour operation from the Canadian Labour Time Guide and claim 0.2 hours.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
