POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKS AT PUMP/RESERVOIR CONNECTION

POWER STEERING FLUID LEAK FROM THE PUMP RESERVOIR TO PUMP HOUSING CONNECTION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1988 "N" CARLINES WITH QUAD 4 ----------------- 2.3L (LD2) ENGINE

Some early built 1988 "N" cars equipped with Quad 4 (LD2) engines may exhibit a condition where power steering fluid leaks from the attachment point between the reservoir and the pump. This condition may be caused by interference between the reservoir and the pump, which causes misalignment between the pump and the reservoir. This misalignment will not allow proper sealing between the reservoir and pump causing a fluid leak.

This condition should only be present in vehicles within the following VIN ranges:

Pontiac Grand AM ("C" Assembly Plant) : 1G2NV14D9JC604404 - JC636862

Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais ("M" Assembly Plant): 1G3NT14DOJM200743 - JM216598

Buick Somerset/Skylark ("M" Assembly Plant) : 1G4NM14D2JM000245 - JM010368

If this leakage condition is experienced on a vehicle equipped with a 2.3L Quad 4 engine (VIN Code D), and the vehicle falls within the indicated VIN range, the pump and reservoir assembly should be replaced following the procedure in section 3B3 of the chassis service manual.

The part number for the power steering pump assembly is 26000492.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
