CLICK NOISE/INTERMITTENT LAMP OPERATION (SERVICE PROCEDURE)

SUBJECT: CLICKING NOISE OR INTERMITTENT GAUGE/INDICATOR LAMP OPERATION (REPOSITION CONNECTOR/TRIM EXCESS MATERIAL NEAR ODOMETER MOTOR)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 BUICK "N" -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition:

---------- Some 1992 Buick Skylarks built before: VIN lG4NJ54NlNC604633

may produce a "clicking" noise coming from the instrument panel area. This click may be heard approximately twice every tenth of a mile (kilometer) or 20 times every mile (kilometer). Affected vehicles are equipped with liquid crystal display (LCD) shift indicator. Second design with the light emitting diode (LED) shift indicators are not affected.

Cause:

------ In some vehicles, the 18 pin connector in the Instrument Panel (I/P) may have become cocked in assembly causing the rear case of the instrument cluster to flex causing the case to contact the odometer drive gear.

Correction:

----------- This condition may be corrected as follows:

1. Remove instrument panel cluster as described in the 1992 Buick Skylark Service Manual.

2. Inspect 18 pin connector to be sure it is properly seated and not cocked in the instrument panel as shown in Figure 2.

3. Reseat the connector as necessary.

4. Take I/P cluster to a clean work area and place on a clean cloth or fender cover to prevent scratching the lens.

5. Trim area with hobbyist tool to relieve interference from odometer as shown in Figure 1. Use care in trimming to avoid nicking or damaging the printed circuit.

6. Install instrument cluster as outlined in the 1992 Buick Service Manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
