FRONT MAP LAMP BUTTON BIND OR STICKING- REPLACE MAP LAMP

SUBJECT: FRONT MAP LAMP BUTTON BINDING OR STICKING (REPLACE MAP LAMP)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 "N" MODELS PONTIAC GRAND AM OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA BUICK SKYLARK

CONDITION:

---------- Some owners of 1992 "N" series may experience the front map lamp buttons binding or sticking upon actuation. The cars were built before the following VIN breakpoints:

Plant VIN Code C Plant VIN Code M ---------------- ---------------- BUICK - 1G4NJ54N1NC634523 PONTIAC - 1G2NE1438NM051199 PONTIAC - 1G2NE1436NC237748 OLDSMOBILE - 1G3NF54N8NM422248

CAUSE:

------ Inadequate clearance between the rear map lamp bezel snap legs and the button. When the map lamp is assembled into the storage box, the snap legs bind against the button preventing proper travel needed for the button.

CORRECTION:

----------- Remove the front map lamp and replace it following the 1992 "N" Car Service Manual. The service part numbers containing the design change are:

Color and Side Service Part Number -------------- ------------------- MED SLATE GRAY (15I) RH 12521040 MED SLATE GRAY (15I) LH 12521041 GRAPHITE (78I) RH 12521042 GRAPHITE (78I) LH 12521043 MED CAMEL (76I) RH 12521044 MED CAMEL (76I) LH 12521045 GARNET (78I) RH 12521046 GARNET (78I) LH 12521047

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
