SUBJECT: A/C COMPRESSOR CUT OFF DURING EXTENDED ENGINE IDLE AT HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (REPLACE ENGINE COOLING FAN)

MODELS: 1994-95 CHEVROLET BERETTA AND CORSICA WITH 3.1L ENGINE (VIN M - RPO L82) OR Z26 PACKAGE

1994-95 BUICK SKYLARK 1994-95 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1994-95 PONTIAC GRAND AM

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY EXPRESS CONCERN WITH THE A/C COMPRESSOR CUTTING OUT DURING EXTENDED ENGINE IDLE OR IN "STOP AND GO" TYPE TRAFFIC.

CAUSE:

THE A/C COMPRESSOR SHUTS OFF DUE TO HIGH A/C SYSTEM PRESSURES AND/OR HIGH ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURES.

CORRECTION:

NOTE: PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING CORRECTION PROCEDURE MAY CREATE AN INTERFERENCE FIT BETWEEN THE COOLANT FAN AND THE RADIATOR. SHIMS MAY BE PLACED BETWEEN THE COOLANT FAN BRACKET AND THE UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT. A MINIMUM OF 10MM DISTANCE IS REQUIRED BETWEEN THE RADIATOR AND THE COOLANT FAN.

REPLACE THE CURRENT ENGINE COOLING FAN WITH NEW LOW PROFILE 240-WATT ENGINE COOLING FAN, P/N 22137323. ALONG WITH THE NEW ENGINE COOLING FAN, A NEW FAN CONTROL RELAY ASSEMBLY, P/N 12088577, MUST ALSO BE REPLACED.

FOLLOW SERVICE PROCEDURES OUTLINED IN SECTION 6B FOR THE ENGINE COOLING FAN AND SECTION 8A FOR THE COOLING FAN RELAY IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL.

PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM GMSPO.
