INFO. ON OBDII HAND HELD DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON OBDII HAND HELD DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER - EQUIPMENT PURCHASE CONSIDERATIONS

MODELS: 1996 AND FUTURE PASSENGER CARS AND TRUCKS

GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE TECHNOLOGY GROUP HAS DEVELOPED THE TECH 2 DIAGNOSTIC HAND HELD COMPUTER TO SERVICE 1997 MODEL YEAR AND FUTURE GM PASSENGER CARS AND TRUCKS. THE TECH 2 IS MORE POWERFUL THAN THE TECH 1, HAVING MORE MEMORY AND IMPROVED DISPLAY CAPABILITIES.

THE TECH 1, COUPLED WITH THE VIM (PART NUMBER 7000041), WILL SATISFY ALL GM VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC SCANNER REQUIREMENTS ON PRE-1997 VEHICLES.

WHILE THE TECH 1 WILL BE INCAPABLE OF PROGRAMMING THE MORE POWERFUL ON-BOARD COMPUTERS WHICH WILL BE USED IN THE 1997 MODEL YEAR, IT WILL STILL BE REQUIRED TO DIAGNOSE 1996 AND OLDER VEHICLES.

THE TECH 2 WILL BE SHIPPED TO ALL GM DEALERSHIPS AS AN ESSENTIAL TOOL PRIOR TO THE SHIPMENT OF 1997 MODEL VEHICLES. DEPENDING ON MODEL INTRODUCTIONS, TECH 2 SHIPMENTS WILL START IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1996.

REPRESENTATIONS FROM SOME SERVICE TOOL SUPPLIERS THAT THEIR TOOL WILL BE THE ONLY TOOL AVAILABLE IN TIME FOR THE 1997 VEHICLES IS MISLEADING AND SHOULD BE DISREGARDED.

GM-STG DOES NOT RECOMMEND THE PURCHASE OF ANY ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER (SCANNER) APART FROM THE ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT AT THIS TIME.

GENERAL MOTORS BULLETINS ARE INTENDED FOR USE BY PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS, NOT A "DO-IT-YOURSELFER". THEY ARE WRITTEN TO INFORM THOSE TECHNICIANS OF CONDITIONS THAT MAY OCCUR ON SOME VEHICLES, OR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN THE PROPER SERVICE OF A VEHICLE. PROPERLY TRAINED TECHNICIANS HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND KNOW-HOW TO DO A JOB PROPERLY AND SAFELY. IF A CONDITION IS DESCRIBED, DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE BULLETIN APPLIES TO YOUR VEHICLE, OR THAT YOUR VEHICLE WILL HAVE THAT CONDITION. SEE A GENERAL MOTORS DEALER SERVICING YOUR BRAND OF GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLE FOR INFORMATION ON WHETHER YOUR VEHICLE MAY BENEFIT FROM THE INFORMATION.
