Removal Procedure

Notice: The inertial weight section of the balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct removal procedure must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the balancer.

Tools Required

J 24420-B

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  4. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Remove the right splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement in Bumpers.
  6. Remove the transmission converter cover.

  7. Object Number: 54672  Size: SH
  8. Remove the balancer retaining bolt. Have an assistant keep the flywheel from turning.
  9. Install the J 24420-B on the balancer.
  10. Turn the puller screw.
  11. Remove the balancer.

Installation Procedure

Notice: The inertial weight section of the balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct removal procedure must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the balancer.

Tools Required

J 29113 Crankshaft Balancer Installer

  1. Coat the front cover seal contact area with engine oil.
  2. Apply sealant to the crankshaft key. Apply sealant to the crankshaft keyway. Use GM RTV sealant P/N 1052917 or its equivalent.

  3. Object Number: 54672  Size: SH
  4. Place the balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft.
  5. Install the J 29113 onto the crankshaft.
  6. Pull the balancer into position.
  7. Remove the J 29113 from the balancer.
  8. Install the balancer retaining bolt. Have an assistant keep the flywheel from turning.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 103 N·m (76 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the transmission converter cover.
  11. Install the right splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement in Bumpers.
  12. Install the right tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
