Starter Solenoid Does Not Click, and the Engine Does not Crank

  1. Place the gear selector in PARK (automatic transmission) or depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the starter solenoid terminal S and ground.

Is battery voltage measured?

  1. Disconnect the transaxle range switch connector (automatic transmission) or disconnect the clutch pedal position switch connector (manual transmission).
  2. Measure the voltage between the transaxle range switch connector C2 terminal G and ground (automatic transmission).
  3. Measure the voltage between the clutch pedal position switch connector terminal A and ground (manual transmission).
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Is battery voltage measured?

B+

Go to Step 6

  1. Place the gear selector in PARK (automatic transmission) or depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the starter solenoid terminal S and the starter motor mounting bolts.

Is battery voltage measured?

B+

  1. Clean the starter motor and mounting bolts in order to create a good ground to the engine block.
  2. Inspect for rust, dirt or excess paint.

Replace the starter solenoid. Refer to Starter Solenoid Replacement .

  1. Connect the fused jumper across the transaxle range switch connector C2 terminals G and E (automatic transmission) or across the clutch pedal position switch terminals A and B (manual transmission).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector C2.
  2. Measure the voltage between connector C2 terminal C and ground.
  3. Measure the voltage between connector C2 terminal B and ground.

Is battery voltage measured?

B+

Go to Step 10

  1. Inspect the transaxle range switch adjustment (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal position switch adjustment (manual transmission).
  2. If OK, replace the transaxle range switch or the clutch pedal position switch.

Is the repair complete?

Repair the open in circuit 6 between transaxle range switch or clutch pedal position switch and starter solenoid.

  1. Connect the ignition switch connector C2.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Backprobe ignition switch and measure the voltage between connector C1 of terminal C and ground.

Is battery voltage measured within specified range?

B+

Repair the open in circuit 242 between the fuse block and ignition switch.

Repair the open in circuit 5 between ignition switch and transaxle range switch or clutch pedal position switch.
