Transmission Replacement 3100 VIN M

Removal Procedure

    • J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
    • J 35944 Oil Cooler Flushing Tool
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    in General Information.
  2. Remove the air intake duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  3. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission.

  5. Remove the vacuum modulator vacuum line at the modulator.

    Important: When servicing requires that the T latch type wiring connector be disconnected from the switch, care must be taken in order to ensure proper reassembly of both the connector and the T latch. Failure to do so may result in intermittent loss of switch functions.

  7. Remove the following wiring connectors:
  8. • The TCC connector
    • The Park/Neutral position switch
    • The shift solenoid connector

  9. Install the J 28467-360 .

  11. Remove the top two transmission to engine bolts.
  12. Remove the rubber hose from the transmission to vent pipe.

  14. Remove the remaining upper engine to transmission bolts.
  15. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  16. Remove both the tire and the wire assemblies. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  17. Remove the right and the left splash shields.
  18. Remove both the front ABS wheel speed sensors and the harness from the left side suspension support. Refer to Front Wheel Speed Sensor in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
  19. Remove both of the ball joints from the control arms. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  20. Remove the left stabilizer shaft link pin bolt. Refer to Stabilizer Link in Front Suspension.
  21. Remove the left stabilizer shaft frame bushing clamp nuts. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft in Front Suspension.
  22. Remove the left suspension support assembly. Refer to Control Arm and/or Suspension Support in Front Suspension.
  23. Remove both of the drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
  24. Remove the engine to transmission brace.
  25. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  27. Remove the transmission converter cover.
  28. Remove the heater core hose pipe brace to transmission nut and bolt.
  29. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Using a scribe, mark the flywheel to torque converter relationship in order to assure the proper reassembly. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  30. Remove the oil level indicator and the fill tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  31. Remove the transmission cooler pipes. Plug the pipes in order to prevent leakage. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  32. Remove the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement
  33. Remove the vacuum reserve tank.
  34. Remove the position transmission jack.
  35. Remove the transmission mount to the body bolts. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .

  37. Remove the remaining engine to transmission bolts.
  38. Remove the transmission.
  39. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with J 35944 , or equivalent, whenever the transmission, the pump, the torque converter, or the case has been removed for overhaul or replacement.

Installation Procedure

  1. Place a thin film of chassis grease GM P/N 1051344 or the equivalent on the torque converter pilot hub.
  2. Properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.

  3. Position the transmission in the vehicle.

  5. Install the lower engine to transmission bolts.
  6. Install the transmission mount to body bolts. Remove the transmission jack.
  7. Install the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  8. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  9. Tighten
    Tighten all of the bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft). Hand start and tighten the net slot bolt first. Hand start and tighten the two remaining bolts.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the oil level indicator and the fill tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  11. Install the vacuum reserve tank.
  12. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  14. Install the transmission converter cover.
  15. Install the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement .
  16. Install the drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
  17. Install the left suspension support assembly. Refer to Control Arm and/or Suspension Support in Front Suspension.
  18. Install the left stabilizer shaft frame bushing nuts. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft in Front Suspension.
  19. Install the stabilizer shaft link pin bolt. Refer to Stabilizer Link in Front Suspension.
  20. Install the engine to the transmission brace.
  21. Install both of the ball joints to the control arms. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  22. Connect the ABS wheel speed sensor harnesses. Refer to Front Wheel Speed Sensor in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
  23. Install the right and the left side splash shields.
  24. Install the heater core pipe brace to the transmission nut and the bolt.
  25. Install both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  26. Lower the vehicle.

  28. Install the upper engine to transmission bolts.
  29. Install the shift linkage to the transmission.

  31. Install the following wire connectors:
  32. • The TCC connector
    • The Park/Neutral start and back-up lamp switch
  33. Install the wiring harness and the nut securing the harness to the transmission.

  35. Remove the J 28467-360 .
  36. Install the rubber hose to the transmission vent pipe.

  37. Object Number: 97313  Size: SH
  38. Install the vacuum modulator vacuum line.
  39. Install the air intake duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  40. Connect the negative battery cable.
  41. Refill the transmission with the proper fluid.
  42. Adjust the shift linkage.
  43. Inspect the oil level.
  44. Ensure that there are no oil leaks.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the intake air duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  3. Remove the cable control cover.
  4. Remove the throttle cable.
  5. Remove the shift cable and the bracket.
  6. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle body.
  7. Remove the vacuum lines.
  8. Remove the electrical connections.
  9. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Assembly (2.4L) in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  10. Remove the oil fill tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  11. Install the J 28467-360 .

  13. Remove the top engine to transmission bolts.
  14. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  15. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  16. Remove the left splash shield.
  17. Remove both of the front ABS wheel speed sensors and the harness from the left suspension support. Refer to Front Wheel Speed Sensor in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
  18. Remove both of the lower ball joints. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  19. Remove the stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Stabilizer Link in Front Suspension.
  20. Remove the front air deflector.
  21. Remove the left suspension support. Refer to Control Arm and/or Suspension Support in Front Suspension.
  22. Remove both of the drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.

  24. Remove the engine to transmission brace.

  26. Remove the transmission converter cover.
  27. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  28. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  29. Remove the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  30. Remove the ground wires from the engine to the transmission bolt.
  31. Remove the cooler pipe brace.
  32. Remove the exhaust brace.

  34. Remove the bolts from the engine and the transmission mount.
  35. Support the transmission with a jack.
  36. Remove the transmission mount to body bolts.
  37. Remove the heater core hose pipe brace to transmission nut and bolt.

  39. Remove the remaining engine to transmission bolts.
  40. Remove the transmission assembly.
  41. The transmission cooler and the lines should be flushed with J 35944 , or equivalent, whenever the transmission has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, the pump, or the case.

Installation Procedure

  1. Place a thin film of grease GM P/N 1051344 or the equivalent on the torque converter pilot knob. Properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.
  2. Install the transmission assembly into position with the jack while installing the right drive axle.

  4. Install the lower engine to transmission bolts in the proper location.

  5. Object Number: 104407  Size: SH
  6. Install the transmission mount to body bolts.
  7. Install the engine and the transmission mount bolts.
  8. Install the exhaust brace.
  9. Install the cooler pipe brace.
  10. Install the ground wires at the engine to transmission bolt.
  11. Install the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  12. Apply adhesive/sealant compound GM P/N 12345493 or the equivalent on the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
  13. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  14. Install the flywheel cover.
  15. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  17. Install the engine to transmission brace.
  18. Install the drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
  19. Install the left suspension support. Refer to Control Arm and/or Suspension Support in Front Suspension.
  20. Install the front air deflector.
  21. Install the stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Stabilizer Link in Front Suspension.
  22. Install the lower ball joints. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  23. Connect both the ABS wheel speed sensors. Refer to Front Wheel Speed Sensor in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
  24. Install the left splash shield.
  25. Install the heater core pipe brace nut and the bolt.
  26. Install both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  27. Lower the vehicle.

    Important: Install the bolts in the proper location.

  29. Install the top engine to transmission bolts in the proper location.
  30. Remove the engine support fixture.
  31. Install the oil fill tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  32. Install the power steering pump assembly and adjust the belt. Refer to Power Steering Pump Assembly (2.4L) in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  33. Connect the electrical connections.
  34. Install the vacuum lines.
  35. Install the throttle cable to throttle body.
  36. Install the shift cable and the bracket.
  37. Install the throttle cable.
  38. Install the cable control cover.
  39. Install the intake air duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  40. Connect the negative battery cable.
  41. Fill the transmission with the proper fluid.
  42. Adjust the shift linkage.
  43. Inspect for oil leaks. Check the oil level.
