Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36011 Spark Plug Removal Tool

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    Object Number: 13209 Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness electrical connector.
  3. Remove the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly to camshaft housing bolts.
  4. Notice: Spark plug boots often adhere to the spark plugs. Use tool J 36011 in order to remove by first twisting and then pulling upward on retainers. Reinstall the boots and the retainers on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals. The boots and the retainers must be in place on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals prior to the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly installation or ignition control system damage may result.

  5. Remove the ignition coil and electronic ignition control module assembly from the engine.

  6. Object Number: 13214 Size: MH
  7. Remove the housing to cover screws (7).
  8. Important: When removing the housing (6) from the cover (1) make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  9. Remove the housing (6) from the cover (1).
  10. Disconnect the coil harness electrical connector (4).
  11. Remove the coil(s) (5), contact(s), and seal(s) from the cover (1).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 13214 Size: MH
  1. Install the coil(s) (5) to the cover (1).
  2. Connect the coil harness electrical connector (4).
  3. Install the seals into the housing (replace with new seals).
  4. Install the contacts into the housing (use petroleum jelly to retain).
  5. Important: When installing the housing (6) to the cover (1) make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  6. Install the housing (6) to the cover (1).
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the housing to cover screws (7).
  9. Tighten
Tighten the housing to cover screws 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  10. Install the spark plug boots (8) and the retainers (9) to the housing.

  11. Object Number: 13209 Size: SH
  12. Install the ignition coil and electronic ignition control module assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the boots to the spark plug terminals.

  14. Install the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly to camshaft housing bolts after coating the threads with P/N 1052080.
  15. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 22 N·m (16 lb Ft).

Important: The ICM cover bolts must be installed with isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.

  16. Connect the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness electrical connector.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
