Since the problems in the steering, the suspension, the tires and the wheels involve several systems, the problems must all be considered when diagnosing a concern. In order to avoid using the wrong symptom, road test the vehicle first. Proceed with the following preliminary checks and correct any substandard conditions that are found.

    • Inspect the tires for wrong pressure and uneven wear.
    • Inspect the joints from the steering column to the steering gear for loose connectors or wear.
    • Inspect the front and rear suspension, and the steering gear for loose, damaged or worn parts.
    • Inspect for out-of-round or out-of-balance tires, bent wheels, and loose and/or rough bearings in the hub and bearing assembly.
    • Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Also check the power steering fluid level and the pump drive belt tension.
    • Inspect the joints of the intermediate shaft between the steering column and the gear for sticking and binding.
