In addition to the steering function, the steering column includes the following features:

    • The steering column is energy absorbing and is designed to compress in a front-end collision. Compression decreases the chance of injury to the driver.
    • The ignition switch and lock are mounted on the column.
    • The column-mounted lock can lock the ignition and the steering column. This feature inhibits vehicle theft.

The column is easily disassembled and reassembled. Use only the specified screws, bolts, and nuts in order to ensure the energy-absorbing action of the steering column. Tighten the nuts to the specified fastener tightening specifications.

Remove the column assembly from the vehicle with care. The plastic fasteners maintain the steering column's rigidity. The plastic fasteners can be damaged, sheared, or loosened by the following actions:

    • The use of an incorrect steering wheel puller. Use the steering wheel puller recommended in the service manual.
    • Striking sharply on the end of the steering shaft or the shift lever
    • Leaning on the assembly
    • Dropping the assembly
