ALL MODELS OF THE "A", "J", "X" AND "N" CARS HAVE HAD AN OUTBOARD SHOE THAT IS HELD IN POSITION BY CLINCHING THE TABS WITH A BALL PEEN HAMMER. THE OBJECT OF THE PEENING IS TO TIGHTLY ATTACH THE SHOE TO THE CALIPER TO DAMPEN OUT VIBRATIONS IN THE PAD THAT CAN CAUSE A SQUEAL. TIGHTENING THE PAD BY RECLINCHING CAN HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON SQUEAL. TO RECLINCH THE SHOE: 1. PRY ON THE ROTOR WITH A SCREWDRIVER TO MOVE THE PAD INTO THE CALIPER. (FIGURE ). 2. HAVE SOMEONE APPLY THE BRAKES FIRMLY. 3. RECLINCH THE SHOE BY PEENING THE TAB. THE SERVICE MANUAL CONTAINS ARTWORK OF THIS PROCEDEDURE. HOWEVER, THIS PROCEDURE IS DIFFERENT THAN THE MANUAL'S BECAUSE IT REQUIRES THAT THE BRAKES BE APPLIED WHILE PEENING, TO HOLD THE PAD FIRMLY IN POSITION.
