Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the generator. Refer to
Generator Replacement
.
- Remove the generator bracket. Refer to
Generator Bracket Replacement
.
- Remove the right spark plug wires. Refer to
Spark Plug Wire Replacement
.
- Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge valve.
- Remove the EVAP purge valve.
- Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils. Refer to
Ignition Coil Replacement
.
- Remove the ignition coil bracket studs.
- Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.
Important: Valve rocker arm cover gasket and sealant must be carefully trimmed away from the lower intake manifold gasket. Failure to do so will damage the lower intake manifold gasket, causing a severe oil leak.
- Remove the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.
Important: When removing the valve rocker arm cover, ensure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.
- Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
Bump the end of the valve rocker cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.
- Trim the valve gasket and sealant away from the lower intake manifold gasket at the cylinder head to lower
intake manifold joints (1).
- Remove the valve cover gasket.
- Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
- Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection
.
Installation Procedure
Important: Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint. Refer to
Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
.
- Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joints (1).
- Install a new gasket to the valve rocker arm cover. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated in the groove
of the valve rocker arm cover.
- Install the right valve rocker arm cover.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
Important: Use an alternating criss-cross pattern when tightening the valve rocker cover bolts. Failure to do so may result in oil leakage from the valve cover due to improper seating of the gasket.
- Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- Install the vacuum hose to the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.
- Install the ignition coil bracket studs.
- Install the ignition coil bracket with coils. Refer to
Ignition Coil Replacement
.
- Install the EVAP purge valve.
- Connect the vacuum hoses to the EVAP purge valve.
- Install the right spark plug wires. Refer to
Spark Plug Wire Replacement
.
- Install the generator bracket. Refer to
Generator Bracket Replacement
.
- Install the generator. Refer to
Generator Replacement
.
- Install the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
