Power Outlet Receptacle Inoperative 120 AC Volts

Diagnostic Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

The accessory AC/DC power control module converts the 12 V DC battery voltage to 108-125 V AC to operate AC-powered devices. The accessory AC/DC power control module provides up to 150 W of power. The 115 V AC auxiliary power outlet is located on the right rear interior trim panel. The AC/DC power control module is located behind the right rear trim panel.

Battery voltage is supplied to the accessory AC/DC power control module from the 25 A AC/DC INVRTR fuse located in the underhood fuse block. The accessory AC/DC power control module is grounded to the right D-pillar. When the ignition is turned ON or to accessory, ignition voltage is supplied to the plug-inserted switches in the accessory power outlet. When a 115 V AC powered device is plugged into the outlet, the normally-open plug-inserted switches, located internally in the accessory power outlet, close. The accessory AC/DC power control module detects voltage on the signal circuit and the accessory AC/DC power control module supplies 115 V AC to the accessory power outlet after a 1.5 second delay. The LED on the outlet illuminates to indicate that the outlet is powered.

Diagnostic Aids

    • A household wall-outlet tester should not be used to diagnose this system. The tester will indicate an open ground, which is a normal condition.
    • The ignition voltage circuit is a low-current output, and may not illuminate a test lamp.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, verify that a 115 V AC powered device functions when plugged into the auxiliary power outlet.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the auxiliary power outlet.
  2. Ignition ON, test for greater than 2.5 V between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  3. If less than the specified range, test the ignition voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connectors at the accessory AD/DC power control module.
  5. Ignition OFF and scan tool disconnected, open and close the driver door, and wait 1 minute. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 1 C2 and ground.
  6. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  7. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 2 C2 and ground.
  8. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  9. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector to the auxiliary power outlet.
  10. Test for less than 2 Ω between the following terminals:
  11. • The phase A circuit terminal 6 C1 at the module harness, and the hot terminal at the auxiliary power outlet
    • The neutral circuit terminal 4 C1 at the module harness, and the neutral terminal at the auxiliary power outlet
    If greater than the specified range, test the appropriate circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  12. Test for infinite resistance between the following terminals at the module harness and ground:
  13. • The phase A circuit terminal 6 C1
    • The neutral circuit terminal 4 C1
    If less than the specified value, test the appropriate circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  14. Test for greater than 1 MΩ between the phase A circuit terminal 6 C1 and the neutral circuit terminal 4 C1.
  15. If less than the specified value, test the phase A circuit and the neutral circuit for a shorted together condition. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  16. Connect an AC-powered device to the auxiliary power outlet.
  17. Ignition ON, test for greater than 2.5 V between the signal circuit terminal 2 C1 and ground.
  18. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  19. If all circuits test normal, replace the accessory AD/DC power control module.

Component Testing

Auxiliary Power Outlet Test

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the auxiliary power outlet.
  2. Test for greater than 1 MΩ between the phase A circuit terminal 6 and the neutral circuit terminal 3.
  3. If less than the specified range, replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  4. Test for less than 1 Ω between the following terminals:
  5. • The phase A circuit terminal 6, and the hot terminal
    • The neutral circuit terminal 3, and the neutral terminal
    If greater than the specified range, replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  6. Test for infinite resistance between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 4 and the signal circuit terminal 1.
  7. If not the specified value, replace the auxiliary power outlet.
  8. Connect an AC-powered device to the auxiliary power outlet.
  9. Test for less than 1 Ω between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 4 and the signal circuit terminal 1.
  10. If greater than the specified range, replace the auxiliary power outlet.
