In 1988, the Allante may be ordered with the standard digital cluster or an optional analog (dial needle) cluster (option UY9). Some customers may express interest in obtaining an analog cluster on vehicles built with digital cluster or vice versa. These clusters may be retrofit in service by following the procedure below.
1. Obtain the proper cluster and matching trim plate using the list of parts given below. Trim plates may be obtained from GMSPO. Exchange clusters may be obtained from VDO-Yazaki by calling (703) 665-2446. Before ordering an analog cluster from VDO-Yazaki, record the current vehicle mileage. VDO-Yazaki will require this mileage to pre-set the odometer wheels on the analog cluster to the proper mileage. When ordering an exchange cluster from VDO-Yazaki for use with this procedure, specify that the cluster will be used for retrofit:
Analog Digital Cluster Cluster ------- -------
Cluster Part Number 1640823 1645296 Cluster Cost* $270.00 $640.00 Trim Plate Part Number 1644529 1637630
* Clusters will be shipped C.O.D. The cluster cost shown includes a core charge but does not include shipping charges which will be added to the cluster cost.
2. Remove the old cluster and trim plate and install the new cluster and tirm plate per the procedure in the Allante Service Information Manual, Section 8C.
3. Serviceable clusters removed from the vehicle may be returned to VDO-Yazaki for core credit. Core credit for analog clusters is $135.00. Core credit for digital clusters is $320.00.
If an analog cluster is replaced with a digital cluster, dealers can be reimbursed by submitting a warranty claim using Labor Operation T6326 at .3 hour with a net item amount of $522 plus actual shipping cost (the $522 includes parts cost). If a digital cluster is replaced with an analog cluster, dealers should not submit a warranty claim because the core credit will cover the cost of the retrofit.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
