Some 1987-1988 Allantes may exhibit a condition of third gear start from stop or upon initial engagement of forward drive range (cold or hot). Owner descriptions might also be reported as a loss of drive at stops or delayed forward engagement followed by a harsh downshift into first gear on acceleration. This condition may be caused by a sticking 2-3 shift solenoid in the transaxle.
A new 2-3 shift solenoid went into production on December 10, 1987 (Julian Date 344). Refer to Figure 1 for Julian Date information.
The diagnostic trouble tree on the reverse side of this bulletin should be utilized to diagnose a sticking 2-3 shift solenoid.
Until further notice the THM F-7 transaxle exchange program, refer to Serviceman Bulletin T-87-80, should be used to service solenoid and wiring conditions within the transaxle.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
