WIND NOISE AT STATIONARY VENT WINDOW (REPAIR DESCRIBED)

WIND NOISE AT STATIONARY VENT WINDOW

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987-1988 ALLANTE -----------------

Some 1987-1988 Allantes may experience a wind noise at the stationary vent glass. The noise level will increase as vehicle speed increases. This condition may be caused by the lack of adhesive sealer between the vent frame and vent glass. To repair this condition, use the following service procedure:

1. Open door to its full open position.

2. Apply a liquid soap bubble solution to the exterior of the vent frame and glass assembly where the glass and frame meet, refer to Figure 1.

3. Using a regulated air gun (at 30 psi), blow air from inside the vent frame and direct air flow towards perimeter of the vent frame, refer to Figure 2. Bubbles will appear on the outside of the vent glass in the area(s) not sealed.

CAUTION:

To minimize the chance of personal injury, safety glasses should be worn when operating air gun.

4. Clean the inside surface of glass and vent frame in the area to be sealed thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol or equivalent.

5. Apply a strip of 3/4" masking tape on both the vent frame and vent glass for clean up purposes, refer to Figure 3. Apply tape as close as possible to the gap to be sealed in order to limit the bead size of the sealer.

6. Prepare area to be sealed using the two-step priming process included in adhesive caulking kit, P/N 993110. Allow to dry for five minutes.

7. Apply a thin bead of GM black adhesive, caulking, P/N 993110, in the affected area, refer to Figure 4.

8. Remove tape and allow adhesive to dry.

Use the most applicable labour operation from the Canadian Labour Time Guide and claim 0.5 hours for each side.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
